Large, luxurious beds feature the Harbor House Home brand’s own linens; there are no televisions or minibars. Propped on a clifftop on the rustic Northern California coast, this historic inn’s sensational setting is only part of its charm. The small restaurant punches well above its weight with an astonishing journey through local, coastal terroir, and service is exceptionally warm. The welcome from general manager Amanda Nemec could not be warmer – and the same is true of the inn’s unofficial mascot, French bulldog Ruby. Amanda’s partner and chef Matthew Kammerer – formerly of San Francisco’s triple Michelin-starred Saison – will likely be padding about the garden, picking ingredients for the evening’s meal. The couple offer easy chit-chat and informed recommendations for nearby food and things to do.
There are six rooms within the inn, plus four adjacent cottage suites. Aside from the Lookout room – the smallest and cheapest option – all are generously sized and homey, though the vibe varies. The Redwood room, for example, is all wood panelling and leather armchairs, while the Greenwood room is light and bright, rendered in neutral hues. Some have garden views, while others look at the ocean; most have walk-in showers, and a few also offer a clawfoot tub. All but Lookout have a fireplace for cosying up to at night. Though furnishings differ – one might have a writing desk; another, oversized French dressers – storage is uniformly abundant, inviting guests to settle in.
The location can’t be beaten; the friendly staff recommended some great restaurants, and our room was beautiful. We enjoyed walking to several of the nearby places we wanted to see.
