Our 2 story unit was recently renovated and feels like you’re staying at a boutique hotel with upscale furnishings, plush linens, and beach equipment. The inn was built in 1916 to show off the beauty of redwood timber (pioneers arrived in Elk looking for gold, and found riches in the redwoods instead). An eight-year, $10 million remodel that ended in summer 2018 transformed it from rickety to refined. Rooms are dressed in cosy-but-contemporary furnishings from owner Edmund Jin’s Harbor House Home brand; local arts, crafts and antiques create warmth.

Cottage suites are worth the splurge – particularly Oceansong and Seaview. French doors in the sitting room open onto a private terrace, offering an unobscured Pacific view. In Seaview, the clawfoot tub gazes directly out to the water, too. Elemis bath products feature alongside Harbor House handmade soap, made with flowers from the garden.
Please note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Harbor House Inn is located in Elk and offers free Wi-Fi. It also provides a lift and luggage storage.

Our ocean view room was spacious and updated; there were all the amenities we needed to be very comfortable, and we got the best sleep of our lives on the comfy bed. Kammerer only uses ingredients found within a 30-mile radius, and favours natural techniques such as wood-smoking and fermentation, producing a daily-changing tasting menu that’s quite unlike anything else. Sea vegetables, fish and abalone are caught from the inn’s cove; herbs and flowers grown in the garden get pre-seasoned by coastal fog.
